Poem for Christmas

STAR OF THE WEST

Through your eyes lit with innocence
I’m guided now that it’s dusk.
Magician King who seeks and doesn’t know
The way,
I follow the one I guess
Announced
In that light only of guessed light,
Human childhood, human dawn.

A nativity scene is any cradle
Where the nakedness of the world is warm
And love
begins again.

So take me quickly,
Through the desert of this life,
To the promised Bethlehem…
Or are you the promise?

In Diário VIII, Miguel Torga, Coimbra, Christmas 1959
